ATRAC held a training course in Zagreb
From 2nd to 3rd of June 2026, ATRAC delivered a training course on response to marine pollution incidents involving low-sulphur fuels, alternative fuels, and the use of dispersants at the premises of the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure in Zagreb. The training was organised with the aim of strengthening the knowledge and operational preparedness of key services and stakeholders involved in the implementation of Croatia’s National Contingency Plan for Accidental Marine Pollution Incidents.
The programme provided an overview of the latest developments related to fuels such as LNG, LPG, methanol, biofuels, hydrogen, and ammonia, as well as the environmental, safety, and operational risks associated with their release into the marine environment. Particular emphasis was placed on response strategies, the application of dispersants, and the analysis of lessons learned from real-life incidents and international best practices.
In addition to ATRAC, the training featured contributions from ITOPF (The International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Ltd.), whose representative shared international experience and lessons learned from marine pollution incidents. Through a practical table-top exercise, participants analysed a marine pollution scenario and considered the most appropriate response options.
Upon completion of the training, participants gained additional knowledge on identifying risks, selecting appropriate response measures, and addressing the operational and logistical challenges associated with marine pollution incidents involving new fuel types. The training represents an important contribution to strengthening the national preparedness and response system for accidental marine pollution incidents in the Republic of Croatia.
